Out of the Silent Planet

Greetings, my lords and my ladies, aka fellow book-wormy geeks!

Out of the Silent Planet is by C.S. Lewis. He wrote it because Tolkien challenged him to write a book about outer space. (They had somewhat of a dare exchange. Tolkien agreed he would write a book about time travel if Lewis wrote one about space travel.) I believe it is considered a children's book, though it has a much higher reading level than the Chronicles of Narnia, a series also written by C.S. Lewis.
This book is about a man who gets kidnapped and taken into outer space, the things he discovers and meets there, and how he eventually finds his way back to earth.
I began reading this book thinking I would really enjoy it. I've read every one of the books in the Chronicles of Narnia and loved almost every one. So I was almost sure I'd love this book too. Well, to be frank, I was wrong. My attention was never conquered at any part of the book, and therefore most of the time I kind of had to force myself to sit down and read it. It contained nothing very intriguing in my opinion. It was considerably dull at some parts, and as for the others, I simply was not amused at what was happening. I'm not that interested in outer space. If I was, perhaps I would find it more compelling. I'm just not. So I just didn't.
It's not that I hate this book; indeed there is nothing wrong with it. But nothing in or about it interested me other than the fact it was written by C.S. Lewis, of whom I am an avid fan.

Rated 2/5

I apologize if I have offended those who are a fan of this book :) but this is my honest opinion. Thanks.
~Lady Arwen

P.S. Regarding my last post on The Tempest: if I may, I'd just like to let you know that after giving it much thought I have changed my rating for The Tempest. I've changed it to 3/5 instead of 2/5. Thank you.

  2. And by the way, how does everyone think this book (or books; this is the first book in a trilogy. I failed to mention that.) compare to the Narnia series??

  3. I LOOOOOVE this series. It's like Naria on steroids in space. And it's definitely not a children's book. It's got some pretty mature stuff in there.

  4. Ok, thanks for clarifying. I was wondering about that.

  5. Really? I have no dire need to read it so if my good friends excuse me I will not read this.

Christine, I am re-thinking about contributing to the blog.....

What sort of book's do you have to read?

I am not much of a deep reader.

    I much prefer the bottle.

  8. Did Tolkien ever write that book about time travel?

  9. Lord A, and Sir A.A., I much disapprove all this talk about drinking. Oh, what vile talk! :D

Thanks, Lord A., for your assistance. I was wondering how to do that...

H.R.H. Anne, that is a very good question. Tolkien did write a lot of his book but never finished it. Eventually, his son published what he did write for him.

  13. Good post Lady Arwen. I have not read Out of the Silent Planet but I was considering it since I loved the Chronicles of Narnia. As for your question H.R.H. Anne I have read 8 of Janette Oke's books. I enjoyed them. I love that era. I find life as a 19th century homesteader so fascinating.

  16. For guys who plan to read the Janette Oke books I would suggest the Seasons of the Heart series. A bit less love than the others :)
Miss Rosie, I totally agree to the last sentence of your post.

  17. I would still read Out of the Silent Planet if you liked Narnia. The other two (Perelandra and That Hideous Strength) are really good as well.

  18. I think this/those book sounds cool! I want to read them

  19. Yes. And in my post I did not mean to dis these books! I know people who have enjoyed them, and I totally believe that. I, personally, am not into outer space. That's why I didn't really like it. But I can definitely see how people would like it. I am glad I read this book, whether I was particularly interested in the plot line or not.

  20. I apologize for putting 3 comments all saying the same thing. I didn't mean to. I was just kinda confused about why it said Mike and the second time I forgot to sign my name. I must admit I am pretty ignorant when it comes to computers.

  22. Dewhurst, I think maybe Sunday would be nice. That is without any poems in between. If you want to have a poem in between I'd say wait longer.
    Thanks.

  24. Jane Austen aloud on the blog????

P.S. I am sorry for the drinking references. They are not appropriate.

  25. Jane Austen?? YOU BETCHA. Tini has the final say, but I think Austen is totally aloud. Anything classic, right?

    ReplyDelete
  26. No worries Sir A.A. I guess I wasn't so swell myself.
Thanks Lady A., Sunday should be great. I'm so stupid, I should have thought of that myself.
Oh, and sorry to be a grammatical stick-in-the-mud, but I believe in this case the word would be "allowed" instead of "aloud."

  27. Sir A.A., you'll need some recomendations. I just made that rule up.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So does that mean we have to go from the reading list from now on?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Recommendations, as in someone has to say: "Oh yeah, this guy is a great critic..." or as in book recommendations???

    ReplyDelete
  30. As in someone has to tell me you're qualified, because I don't know who you are.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Recommendation's?? OK..... Anyone???? Anybody??

    Please..... Classic Bookie??? Meatloaf???? Anyone???

    Sir .A.A.

  32. Unfortunately, I don't know you either, but I am sure you are a fine chap. I would recommend you. Does that count?

  34. I love all the Lewis books I've read (about five or six plus the Chronicles), but I've not read the Space Trilogy yet because my mother doesn't recommend it (at least, not until I'm fully an adult). It's nice to hear another confirmation of that. Though, I have heard several times that the first book is the hardest to get into and the worst of the trilogy so you might want to give the others a try.

*has read around 20 Janette Oke's and has gotten read of them because I don't like the romances*
