The Cricket on the Hearth

Hi People,

A book by our very own Charles Dickens! Finally!

I recently finished for the second time The Cricket on the Hearth, by Charles Dickens. It is the story of a man named John Peerybingle and his wife Dot. The story is basically the narrative of an incident in the life of these two people. The cricket's role in the play is simply to bring them good luck, he is the guardian of the home. The cricket is not very important. Other characters weave in and out of the story with most of the time little importance. The plot is so small I could tell the whole story in two sentences, so I will say no more. I think the moral of the story is to never judge things by appearance. Now for my opinion. The first time I read it I thought it was the weirdest thing ever but, the second time it made more sense. One of the things that threw me off the most was that it was very unlike any Dickens book I have read yet. The story line was well... simple. There was nothing big and complicated about it. There was no major twists in the story. I'm not sure if that is a Plus or a Minus . There were a few things that threw me for a loop but over all I enjoyed the book the second time around. I am really going to enjoy all the comments on this one.

  1. This was definitely an interseting book. At first, I could not tell that it was even written by Dickens. After a while though, I saw that it was similar to his other books.

  3. What I love about this book is the description of the family in the first chapter. I had to grin when I was reading about the mother, her son, and her husband. They seemed so happy! The way Dickens described how they looked, that way they spoke to each other, and everything was just so sweet and delightful to read. I could easily picture a home so small and cozy and full of love. I loved the way the husband and wife spoke to each other. It made me laugh and just feel good.
I haven't finished it though. I will soon.

  6. Hi guys. I have been sick, out of town, not in the best of spirits, and simply busy, so that's why I haven't been on the computer.
Thanks for the post, Dodger. I really enjoyed this book. I totally agree with Lady Arwen about the first chapter, "Chirp the First".
I also loved the simplicity of the story. If you want to start reading Dickens, this is an excellent one to begin with.
My mom is reading Oliver Twist aloud to us, and that has been a good book as well. See you all later.

  7. I also have read Oliver Twist, I loved it. It felt more like a Dickens to me. That book is by no means simple. Lots of twists and turns.

Well, I'll save telling my opinion for the post. When do you think that should be? Considering I'm only on chapter 7?
