The Tempest by Shakespeare

Hey guys,
I read the comedic play, The Tempest (W. Shakespeare) a while ago.
It's been rather difficult for me to decide whether I liked it or not. In the end, I would probably say, comparing it the other Shakespearean plays I've read, "just OK." This is partly because I'm not a huge fan of Shakespearean comedies in general and also because it was queer. It was unlike the other Shakes plays I've read. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but some people say the reason he wrote The Tempest was because his friends dared him to try something new and different. So some say he wrote it to prove he had the ability to write fantasy. Whether this is true or not, I did notice a slight difference of style in this play. That's not a bad thing; it was just something I noticed.
The story line wasn't all that attractive to me. It's basically about a sorcerer who tries to avenge his enemies who arose a tempest in order to banish him. Some of the characters are sprites and jolly fairies that make the storyline more playful. It was funny, amusing, and playful, and I consider it good literature, but it didn't amaze me.
I'm anxious to see what everyone's opinions are on this one. I rate it #2.
By the way, I'm sorry all I've done so far is Shakespeare. Next time I will write about a book on the book list, and it won't be another Shakespeare. Thanks, amigos!

  1. Good post. I don't know what to think either. I don't have time, currently, so I will come back later.

  2. This play is definitly... interesting. I like it, but not really. It is hard to exactly point out what I don't like though. I like that Miranda falls madly in love at first sight, but she is rather a boring character, and has nothing of the flair that some of the other Shakespearian women have.

  3. By the way, who is the third picture of?

  4. Yes, I agree about Miranda. I didn't notice anything extraordinary about her, and I though of her as sort of boring.
The love part is always good though...

  5. Sounds cool... I think it's always interesting when authors try different styles.

Just to let you guys know, I'm reading "Captains Courageous," so don't pick that one.

  6. Cool. I really like Captains Courageous. I think I am going to do "The Call of the Wild." So you are safe... Is Thursday a good time to post? Will that give this post enough time?

  7. I read somewhere that this was one of the few plays that Shakespeare wrote that followed the "three unities," (Unities of time, place and action)which I guess was the proper format for a play at the time. Maverick...

  8. Maverick! You betcha.
Tini, what should be the minimum and maximum time in between posts? We should clarify that so we know from now on.
    Thanks.

  12. I love Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller together. The first one was great, so I hope this one can keep it up.
"Fire up the Iron Horse, boys".... "ahhhhhhh, no don't!!!!"

  13. I liked Night at the Museum too. I can't wait to see the 2nd one, maybe I could see it in the Imax. I've never read the Tempest, but I will read it eventually. Good post... I thought it was a "well put" post.

  14. Wow, we did ramble... my fault. Oh, well. Back to the Tempest. I don't even remember Miranda saying anything slightly witty. She was really a wallflower. Poor thing.

  15. You make me laugh!!!!!!!!
The last comment was hilarious, LordA.

I love Owen Wilson in that movie too! He was the best part.
It was really funny on the preview for the second one when General Custer keeps getting Sacagawea's name wrong :D
I also like when Ben Stiller says, "I've seen stuff you can't even imagine."
    "What stuff?"
"I'm not going to tell you."
Haha. I can't wait to see it, even though it does look stupid.

  20. That movie has been a favorite around my house since I saw it for the first time when I was six. We've been quoting it every since. I love it; partly because when I watch it it brings back memories of when I used to watch it with my older siblings.
I love the music. It's so...I don't know. It's like he lives in a different planet. Creepy creepy creepy - but totally awesome!

  21. Hey guys! I figured out what I was trying to say: It's like Peewee lives in playland. He's a grown man who acts like he's five. You have to see it!

  22. Peewee Herman may be the world's scariest man. I have a theory that he's the devil.

  23. That's believable. I second the motion, or theory, or whatever it is. I would like to hear more of your theory sometime.

  24. No my dear, I won't... that is why I should be an actor. I promise to sit, watch and love peewee, if you wish, until the day I die. I might die watching it, but I wouldn't mind being a martyr.
